Is Crohn’s Disease a basis for Social Security benefits?

At Sharon Christie Law, a Baltimore Social Security Disability Law Firm, we are often asked to talk about the topic, Is Crohn’s Disease a basis for Social Security benefits? In this video, Sharon Christie examines this topic Is Crohn’s Disease a basis for Social Security benefits, and what the process of trying to claim social security benefits with a crohn’s disease will be like.

Official Transcript: Is Crohn’s Disease a basis for Social Security benefits?

Hi I’m Sharon Christie your nurse attorney for social security disability benefits. I have represented a lot of people who suffer from Crohn’s Disease. So I want to talk to you about today and whether crohn’s is a basis for a disability case. The answer is yes in some cases.

So let’s review briefly what it means to be disabled under the social security standards. Social security says disabled means your health problems cause such severe limitations that you’re not able to do the type of work you’ve done over the past 15 years or any other type of job on a regular consistent basis. So what I’ve seen with people who suffer from Crohns is that of course a number of symptoms people can have. Abdomnial pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, that is just a few of the symptoms. Those are the ones that I’ve seen the most regularly.

For the clients that I have represented they are severe. They have mostly dealt with crohns their whole life. They’ve been able to make accomodations along the way as they’ve worked because the disease was not that severe for them. Over time they have developed more severe symptoms and it has resulted in them either losing their job or having to resign. Having such severe limits on their day to day limits on their day to day activities that they would not be able to report to a job 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, and be productive.

Those are the things that we look for when we are evaluating a case involving crohns. To see how severe are your symptoms, are they consistantly severe. By that I mean you may have a bout one month, but it could be seven or eight months later you may have another bout. It may put you out of commission for a few days, maybe even a week. It is not fortunately consistant enough that you are consistantly losing a lot of time from work. In that situation that would not be something that would meet the social security requirements. However the people that I deal with have their bouts of symptoms from crohns either from an almost consistant daily basis or multiple times, multiple episodes every week. So there is a lot of variation with the disease and we will evaluate that very carefully.

If you have crohns disease, you suffer from crohns and you have reached the point where it is difficult for you to be able to complete a days work consistantly. Then you do want to think about whether it may be time to apply for social security disability and make sure that you talk to an experienced disability lawyer to get your case fully evaluated.

The Path to Social Security Disability Benefits with Sharon Christie Law

Step 1: Understanding Social Security’s Definition of Disabled

The definition of disabled, according to Social Security, is that you have severe limitations from your health problems that keep you from doing any kind of work for at least 12 consecutive months. This is the first thing we look at when evaluating your case. Your diagnosis is just the starting point. To get disability benefits for you, we must prove that your disabling condition causes severe limitations in your day to day activities.

Step 2: Medical Records in Your Disability Case

You must have medical evidence to prove your disability case. The most important evidence is your medical records that show your diagnosis, your symptoms, and your response to treatment.
