What are the Listings of Impairments and what do they really mean?

Official Transcript: What is the Listing of Impairments

Hi, I am Sharon Christie, your nurse attorney for Social Security Disability Benefits. Let’s talk about the listing of impairments and what that really means in the Social Security Law. There are actually lists of some diseases that can qualify you for disability benefits but it is not just that you have been diagnosed with that disease in this listing of impairments which is what Social Security calls it. In this listing under each disease, they list Social Security lists very specific criteria that they are looking for it might be x-ray results or MRI Results or blood work results or clinical findings from your doctor or those types of things.

It is very different for each disease that is listed by there is very specific criteria and if you can meet those criteria then you may qualify for Social Security Disability based on the listing. Now in our office for every case we will look at the listing if it exists for the conditions that our clients have. Remember that not every condition is in the listing but if the listing exists we will look at the listing to see if we have the evidence to meet that listing and that would be part of the theory of our case to win benefits but if you do not meet that listing if you do not have all of the criteria that is listed there it does not mean that you cannot win the case. This is just one way that you might be able to win your case.
