What are the minimum requirements for Social Security Disability Benefits?

Official Transcript: Minimum Requirements for Social Security Disability Benefits

Hi, I am Sharon Christie your nurse attorney for Social Security Disability Benefits. Let’s talk about the minimum requirements for Social Security Disability Benefits, that you have to meet in order to apply for Social Security Disability. Now the first thing is that you must not be working at all, or if you are working at a very minimal amount. Why is that? Well, that is because Social Security says disabled means you have health problems that prevent you from doing substantial gainful activity. Substantial gainful activity means that you are not able to work at all or can only work at a very minimal amount and that would be doing any type of job. So requirement one is that you are either not working or any work that you are doing is minimal.

Requirement number two is that you have worked long enough paying into the Social Security System. Now the amount you have to have worked is going to depend on your age. It varies but basically the rule is this, if you have worked all or most of your adult life you will have worked enough as long as you are paying Social Security tax.

The third requirement is that you have health problems, health conditions, that cause severe limitations that interfere with your ability to do your current job, your old job, or any other type of work at all.

These are the three requirements to apply for Social Security Disability Benefits and are the minimum requirements for Social Security Disability Benefits.

Requirement #1: You are not working or any work that you are doing is minimal.

Requirement #2: You have worked long enough paying into the Social Security System.

Requirement #3: You have health problems or health conditions that prevent you from doing your job or any type of job.
